internet marketing

Canadians Love the Internet, Eh?

According to The Canadian Press, comScore, the marketing intelligence service says Canadians are leading the way in hours spent online.

Canucks are spending an average of 2,500 minutes online per month which translates to over 41 hours, that’s an entire full-time work week spent surfing. And that’s apparently more than any other country in the world. Based on this data, it seems that Canadians are rapidly adopting the digital lifestyle and seem to be wildly passionate about online video, social media and Wikipedia.

If you take a look at how many Canadians are visiting YouTube, per capita, the great white north is smoking the rest of the world with 21 million Canadians visiting every month. That might not seem like a lot but considering the size of Canada’s population (34,238,000) that’s a lot of YouTubing.  YouTube is obviously deeply embedded in Canadian culture and it’s clear by the data.  Not only are Canadians hitting YouTube more (per capita), they’re also viewing an average of 147 videos each month: that’s 47 more than American users.

In the last month, Canada was ranked #10 on Socialbaker’s Facebook user list. It’s reported that Facebook has penetrated 51% of the Canadian population with 17,288,620 users.  When you view the penetration rates of the top 10 countries, Canada once again takes first place.  Americans came second in the top 10 contenders coming in a 46.98% penetration of the population.

While the exact number of Twitter users by country isn’t available yet, we know that Twitter has been gaining momentum in Canada throughout 2010. Twitter stated  “What we can share is that the number of Twitter accounts in Canada has increased by 75 per cent since the beginning of the year, and the number of daily tweets more than doubled..” And, we’re also seeing Canadians are using the user generated site Wikipedia more than any other country.  This data is based on 16 Wikipedia page views per month on average coupled with 217,000 Wikipedia edits a month.

The Canadian Press article highlights the fact that back in April of this year, comScore estimated that 68% of the Canadian population is online. The proof is in the pudding folks, Canadians are a group of highly progressive and tech savvy people.  Canucks might not get the hottest gadgets on release date but they’re poised to drive their gadgets online more than anyone else.  What do you think is the cause of this obsessive online behaviour.. Are Canadians just too cold to go outside?

Yesterday, Dawn announced she’d be moving on from Outspoken Media. It was hard to see in print, but Dawn stuck with us through an incredibly exhausting year and earned a spot in this family regardless of where her career takes her. We thank her for everything she brought to Outspoken, all the long hours and the work ethic that never ceased to impress. She’ll be missed.

With Dawn’s departure there were questions raised, especially since her announcement follows on the heels of Rae stepping down as CEO.  Over the past two years Outspoken Media has experienced a tremendous amount of growth. That growth came in many shapes and sizes, and with the hard work and trust of many individuals. It has been exhausting, difficult, scary and, at times, absolutely insane. It’s also been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life to date.

As the company grew on performance reports and ledgers, Lisa and I have grown as individuals. Did we do it without any bumps along the way? No. Did we do it without any help? No. But did we do it with a fire in our bellies to keep Outspoken Media our number one priority no matter how often our significant others, family and friends asked us to please shut the computer down? Yes. Business isn’t always fun, but the challenges make us better professionals and, I would like to think, people.

I am proud of what Outspoken Media has accomplished as a brand, a business and a service provider. It’s our baby and to the answer your questions – yes, we’re here to stay. We may not have the same names as when we began, but like any new business, if we cannot overcome inevitable obstacles gracefully and quickly, we didn’t have much going for us to begin with.

We’ve built something special and we will continue to grow this business in the New Year with the help of our team and clients.  Now also seems like an appropriate time to welcome in two new faces to Outspoken Media. Well, at least new to you. They’ve actually been part of our family for a while now. They’re two women who joined our team and showed us how important team is to business. They complete us and in 2011 will be the other half of Outspoken Media.

Sabre Angelique Sarnataro

Internet Marketing Specialist

Sabre serves as one of our Internet marketing specialists and came to Outspoken with a strong background in traditional marketing. She’s worked in promotions, broadcast advertising and print marketing, also delving into freelance web design/development and social media consulting. She has the core belief that every person should print the definition of “honest” to their mirror, not only to remind them of its varied meanings, but to inject it into their everyday lives. She believes a good marketing approach will always include passion, personality and honesty.

Clients will love her because she attacks their projects with passion, creativity and a unique voice. We love her because she’s a tough Italian, outspoken, and has no shame when it comes to the amount of frosting one requires to assemble a gingerbread house [still a sore subject around the office]. She’s also slowly working to increase Lisa’s pop culture knowledge, which we all really appreciate. Her knowledge, her fire and her spunk make her a perfect complement to Outspoken.

Michelle Lyttle Lowery

Senior Content Manager

After serving time in both the United States Air Force as a cryptologic linguist (no, seriously) and Corporate America, Michelle serendipitously fell into Web writing, and hasn’t looked back since. For more than 20 years, Michelle parlayed her love of language into successful writing and editing pursuits. A self-described word nerd, she loves reading and books, and thinks grammar and etymology are fun. She speaks Spanish and Russian conversationally, and could probably get around Paris and Berlin without too much trouble. Since September 2008, she’s been honing her skills as a Web writer and editor, and learning the art and science of SEO, and Internet marketing.

Clients will love Michelle because her uncompromising personal expectations, honest writing, and versatile style and voice. We love Michelle for her excitement, her desire to dig in and get her hands dirty, and for occasionally sending emails so amazing they make us giggle and/or cry. Michelle currently resides in South Carolina so, sadly, she’s not in the office with Lisa, Sabre and myself. But that doesn’t stop us from bugging her via video Skype chats.

Just like any new company, this past year has been a lesson in smart hiring as we opened up our new Troy, NY office.  However, with the addition of Michelle and Sabre, we’re confident we got it right.

To date we’ve been mostly a virtual shop with Lisa and myself working out of our apartments for the better part of the past two years (wee, no pants Friday!). It worked well when it was just us, but as the team grew we saw the effect that working virtually had on morale. As a result, we’ll only be considering candidates in upstate New York for (most) future positions. Yes, Michelle telecommutes, but she’s an exception due to her level of awesomeness and how well she vibes with the team. There’s something to be said for working in an office together with group coffee runs, late night client deadlines and maps for industry domination in 2011.

With that, we hope you’ll join us in welcoming Michelle and Sabre to the team. We think you’ll agree, they live up to the Outspoken Media legacy.   We also want to thank the community for their support.  The messages Lisa and I have received over the past few weeks have been nothing short of amazing.  Thank you.

Are you interested in making some money on the Internet? Then read on. I'm sure you've seen some outrageous claims. "Go from zero to 10,000 a month and only work two hours a week". Or, "22-year-old high school dropout makes $1,000,000 in 6 months". Do You actually think that they would sell you this information for 97 bucks? Unfortunately, many people do believe these phony guru's claims. You can make money on the Internet, but it's not that easy.

A good piece of advice to follow would be don't buy anything until you have an idea of what is actually working. One secret is this, a lot of information about making money on the internet is absolutely free. All you need to know is where to find it.

Let's save you some money and explain what has been working for others. Article Marketing works well. It is a very cheap method that involves writing articles about products and submitting these articles to article directory websites. For instance, if you are promoting plasma television sets. You can write an article about them. About three to 700 words describing the good features about this particular TV set is sufficient. Then at the end of the article is a resource box. In this resource box you are allowed to say a few things about yourself and most importantly, put in a link to your website or blog. If your article is well written. It may be picked up by other website owners looking for, intelligently written content for their websites. The readers then click on your link and visit your blog or site.

A lot of the so-called gurus tell you, you need a domain name, a hosting provider and a website. This is not necessarily the right way to start Internet marketing. You can use a free blog from blogger.com, or WordPress and include links within the text of your blog. These links, when clicked upon, will send the reader to the affiliate site that you are promoting. If the reader buys something you get a five to 10% commission for referring that person to the merchant's website. It sounds pretty easy, but of course, there is more to it than that. How is a person supposed to find your blog among the millions that are out there? To make a long story short, the search engines find your blog. If you have good content and information for your readers, others will find your site. It takes time though.

One way is to become an affiliate of a company called Click Bank. Click Bank sells electronic books on many topics that people are interested in. Things like how to buy and sell cars, or how to make birthday cakes. Click Bank has thousands of electronic or e-books for sale. The customer clicks on a sales page whips out a credit card buys the product, and downloads it on their computer. It costs nothing to sign up for and people can make substantial incomes selling these products.

Another way is to become an affiliate for a furniture company or an auto parts company or the like. When they refer a customer who buys they get a commission for that. When you look at someone's webpage you'll notice a lot of them have advertisements or pictures of products. If you click on the product, or an advertisement link, you'll be taken to the website of the advertiser. If you buy, then the owner of that website gets an affiliate commission.

Another thing is for you to design your own product and sell it on the Internet. You may come up with the next super TV whiz bang product that housewives can't live without. You could also design your own e-book course and sell that to the hordes of hungry consumers out there. The possibilities are endless. But it does require work and ingenuity.

The main problem Internet marketers face is how to get visitors to their blog or website. That isn't easy. A lot of disillusioned people slap up a website or blog, and think that the world somehow will find them. You have to learn how to drive traffic to your site. That is what you need to make money on the Internet. You need to drive traffic that will click on you're ads or buy your products. Figure that out, and you'll do very well.

To sum things up don't go overboard buying a lot of make money packages. You can get started for free using article marketing and free blogs. It doesn't cost anything to become an affiliate for products. Eventually you will need a website, but for the beginner it isn't needed. You don't need to have your own product. You can promote other people's products as an affiliate. It's not easy to make money, but you can succeed if you keep at it. Use your favorite search engine for more information.
